What are Vignettes

The French word "vignette" derives from "vigne" and originally denotes a design of vine-leaves and tendrils.  It was later used to describe a type of photographic portrait, and finally took on a more general meaning as a character sketch or a word-picture.

Sometimes fewer words can create the clearest image.  The shortest story can make the boldest point.

In Vignettes, you will find short, short stories where lives are changed, motives uncovered, affection returned and those abandoned find their way home.  Artistry, political intrigue, the petty, the pious, and humanity's inhumanity and generousity to one another - each are put in the spotlight.

Presented in both Icelandic and English, these stories reflect both timeless Icelandic folklore traditions and today's global citizen's knowledge and interest in the world.  And because these stories focus on moments of real life, they capture the common threads that bind us all together.

In Vignettes III, the author takes the reader to new places both in Iceland and abroad.  The inspiration for these narratives can be found in contemporary events, various kinds of natural disaster and changes with the sructure of Icelandic society over the past century.  As in his previous two works, Armann Reynisson takes the reader by surprise, opens up vistas into a variety of worlds, and shows many insights into human behaviour, and often with a stroke of unexpected boldness.  The narratives are suggestive of strongly visual short films and are well-suited to reading out loud.  These vignettes are intended to be relaxing and to give the reader food for thoughts at the end of a busy day.

Vignettes IIVignettes II

Vignettes II entices the reader along on a magical journey.  With an eye for accuracy, Armann Reynisson delights the imagination and provides flashes of insights into human nature that are sometimes sensitive and at other times candid and daring.  It is a journey that takes us to Iceland and beyond, but one that constantly opens new vistas into the unfamiliar.  The stories lead the reader on from one event to another with a sense of unity in variation until they find echoes in our own experience.  Sometimes fewer words can create the clearest image.  The shortest story can make the boldest point.  These vignettes are both easily visualised portraits, or like short plays that beg to be read out loud.
